MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

We engage in different activities daily; and as a result, we sometimes neglect our mental health. Being aware of our psychological, social, and emotional well-being can contribute to how well we live.

There is a misconception about mental health as many see those suffering from any mental illness as weak. Mental health goes beyond being mentally ill, it varies with different conditions, disorders, and symptoms; some are mildly experienced while some are severe; some are short-term while some are long-term. Anybody can be a victim of mental health without being aware.

Mental health problems are dangerous as it affects more than just someone's health, but also the way a person behaves and interacts with others in our day-to-day lives. It affects relationships, deprives energy, and also causes negative perspectives about the world around us. Mental health problems don’t just come out of nowhere. They are caused by many factors which include traumatic experiences, mental health problems in their family, biological factors, environmental stresses, loneliness or isolation, discrimination, and many more.

SIGNS OF MENTAL ILLNESS

There are many things we often see as norms, but are clear signs indicating mental health issues. Let’s take a look at some of the most common signs of mental illness:

· Lack of Energy

It could be at our work or it could be at home. When we constantly find it difficult to perform our day-to-day tasks due to a lack of energy, it's an early sign of mental health problems. It could be a result of us overthinking, depriving our body and brain the rest it requires, or lack of proper nutrition.

· Sleeping Disorders

One of the signs of mental illness is a sleeping disorder, either too little or too much sleep. Not getting enough rest affects us both physically and psychologically and can start to cause damage to our work, relationships, and well-being. When it becomes consistent, it can develop into a severe mental health problems. We need to help ourselves and make sure we are getting the amount of sleep our mind and bodies require.

· Social Withdrawal

Loneliness can lead to difficult thoughts, worries, and negative thought patterns. Understandably, some people prefer to be alone at times, but we need to be watchful for the people around us, and ourselves, when we start noticing an excessive amount of isolation.

· Extreme Highs then Extreme Lows

Mood swings are not a part of someone’s personality. Being happy at one point, then suddenly becoming sad or angry can cause damage to ourselves and those around us.

· Constant Fear, Worry, and Anxiety

It is normal for people to be confused, fearful, or anxious at times, but if it becomes a constant part of our daily lives it can be a sign of mental illness.
